Report Card Comments for Math

Writing personalized report card comments and phrases for each of your students is hard work, especially for math. Elementary students cover a lot of mathematical ground each year and a teacher must try to neatly summarize their progress in brief report card comments without leaving any significant information out. Use the following phrases to make this part of your job a little bit easier. Tweak them to make them work for your students. Phrases That Describe Strengths Try some of the following positive phrases that tell about a students strength in your report card comments for math. Feel free to mix and match chunks of them as you see fit. The bracketed phrases can be swapped out for more appropriate  grade-specific learning targets. Note: Avoid superlatives that arent all that illustrative of skill such as, This is their  best  subject, or, The student demonstrates  most  knowledge about this topic. These dont help families to really understand what it is that a student can or cant do. Instead, be specific and use action verbs that precisely name a students abilities. The student: Is on track to develop all necessary skills and strategies for successfully [adding and subtracting within 20] by the end of the year.Demonstrates an understanding of the relationship between [multiplication and division and comfortably transitions between the two].Uses data to create charts and graphs with up to [three] categories.Uses knowledge of [place value concepts] to [accurately compare two or more two-digit numbers].Effectively uses supports such as [number lines, ten frames, etc.] to solve mathematical problems independently.Can name and simplify the resulting fraction when a whole is divided into b equal parts and a parts are shaded [where b is greater than or equal to ___ and a is greater than or equal to ___].Provides written justification of thinking and points to evidence to prove that an answer is correct.Estimates the length of an object or line in [centimeters, meters, or inches] and names an appropriate measuring tool for measuring its exact length.Accurately and e fficiently categorizes/names [shapes based on their attributes].Correctly solves for unknown values in [addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division] problems involving [two or more quantities, fractions, decimals, etc.].Consistently applies grade-level problem-solving strategies independently when presented with unfamiliar problems.Describes real-world applications of mathematical concepts such as [counting money, finding equivalent fractions, mental math strategies, etc.]. Phrases That Describe Areas for Improvement Choosing the right language for areas of concern can be tough. You want to tell families how their child is struggling in school and convey urgency where urgency is due without implying that the student is failing or hopeless. Areas for improvement should be support- and improvement-oriented, focusing on what will benefit a student and what they will  eventually  be able to do rather than what they are currently unable to do.  Always assume that a student will grow. The student: Is continuing to develop skills needed for [partitioning shapes into equal parts]. We will continue practicing strategies for ensuring that these parts are equal.Demonstrates an ability to order objects by length but does not yet use units to describe the differences between them.Fluently [subtracts 10 from multiples of 10 through 500]. We are working on developing essential mental math strategies for this.Applies problem-solving strategies for [addition, subtract, multiplication, or division] when prompted. A goal moving forward is increased independence using these.Solves [single-step word problems] accurately with extra time. We will continue to practice doing this more efficiently as our class prepares to solve [two-step word problems].Begins to describe their process for solving word problems with guidance and prompting.Can convert fractions with [values less than 1/2, denominators not exceeding 4, numerators of one, etc.] into decimals. Shows progression toward our learning goa l of doing this with more complex fractions.Additional practice with [addition facts within 10] is needed as we continue [increasing the size and number of addends in problems] to achieve grade-level standards.Tells time accurately to the nearest hour. Introduction As the author of this paper I, Ashiane Odoms, I would like to present my opinion on why Strategies for Learning Success (SLS) introduction to college is important in postsecondary education. SLS will teach you to become more familiar with the concept of college and how to adapt to the adult setting. SLS shows you academic strategies such as making use of your time, taking notes, set attainable goals, and etc. SLS also help you learn about yourself by helping you discover your learning styles, self-concept, and values. SLS will show you tips how to become a successful student, inside and outside of the classroom. At Brevard Community College in Cocoa, FL from 2004 to 2007 there was a survey on First-Time in college fall term college-prep and college students. It was based on the retention rate of students who passed SLS with a â€Å"D† or higher compared to the students who didn’t take SLS. The results were 5.7 percent more of the students who took SLS in FTIC college-prep graduated by spring 2009 than students who didn’t take the course (On course workshop). The survey token place in BCC is just one of many schools that show the same results. â€Å"Getting Started† SLS will benefit you in the P.O.W.E.R learning process. Understanding Latins Third Declension Cases and Endings

A good bet for a Latin noun whose nominative singular ends in -a is that it is a feminine noun of the First Declension. Likewise, a noun ending in -us in the nominative singular is likely Second Declension masculine. There are exceptions, but guessing those is a good starting place. Its not so easy when you get the nouns belonging to the Third Declension. According to William Harris: The 3rd Declension is in a sense a catch-all for various stem-types, and can be very confusing. According to James Ross 18th-century Latin grammar, the nominative singular of a third declension noun may end in: a (of Greek origin [for more on declining Greek nouns in Latin, see Latin Third Declension Nouns of Greek Origin]), e, o, c (rare), d, l, n, r, s, t (caput and compounds), or x Also, he describes the endings used by different genders: Nouns can be masculine (especially with endings in -er, -or, -os, -n, or -o); feminine (especially -do, and -go endings); or neuter (especially nouns ending in -c, -a, -l, -e, -t, -ar, -men, -ur, or -us) in gender. Basic 3rd Declension Types Third Declension nouns may have a consonantal or i-stem. Consonantal Note: For the consonantal stems, it may take some practice to figure out where to add the endings, although, the dictionary form should make this clear. The usual genitive ending of third declension nouns is -is. The letter or syllable before it usually remains throughout the cases. For the masculine and feminine, the nominative replaces the -is ending of the singular with an -es for the plural. (Remember: neuter plural nominatives and accusatives end in -a.) Similarly, the dative plural is formed from the singular with the addition of -bus. Sometimes the root vowel appears to change, as in our second paradigm word below, opus, operis, n. Other cases may also replace the -e- with an -i-, so you might see an accusative singular ending in -im. A neuter i-stem noun, animal, animalis (animal), looks a little different from other neuter 3rd declension nouns in the plural because of the i which makes the nominative and accusative plural of animal: animalia. The word for sea, mare, maris, is another neuter i-stem noun. Hostis, hostis is a generally masculine i-stem noun, but hostis can be feminine. The fact that the nominative and genitive is the same for this masculine or feminine noun indicates that its an i-stem. Scholasticism, which experienced its height around 1250, was the conjunction of faith and reason directed toward understanding the contradictions in the bible and Church teachings. The movie is based of the life and times of a man named Solomon Northup, who was born a free man in Minerva, New York, in 1808. In the movie, the book, and his life, little is known about his mother, because they never gave her name. However in all three we know of his father, a man named Mints, who was originally enslaved to the Northup family from Rhode Island, but he was freed after the family moved to New York. In the movie, a now young man, you saw that Northup helped his father with farming, chores and even worked as a rafts on the waterways of upstate New York. He married Anne Hampton, a woman of mixed black, white, and Native American ancestry, on December 25th, 1829. They had three children together. During the sass, Northup became known as an excellent fiddle player. In 1841, two men offered Northup large sums of wages to Join a traveling musical show, but unfortunately soon after he accepted it they drugged him and sold him into slavery! He was sold at auction in New Orleans in 1841. The story is sometimes believed to have been dedicated to Harriet Beechen Stows and is even said to have introduced another key to Uncle Toms Cabin. Northup book was published in 1853 which was maybe less than a year after he was set free. It sold over 30,000 copies and is therefore not only one of North Americas many slave books, but also one of the most popular ones.

Day of the Dog by Ezra Furman free essay sample

With Chicagoan Ezra  ­Furmans fifth album, he further proves himself to be not only an adventurous songwriter and musician, but also possibly the most unique voice in underground music. Furman released his first recordings with his band, the Harpoons, while still in college eight years ago. Playing earnest and dementedly humorous punky folk-rock in the vein of the Violent Femmes, and singing with an emotive, nervous yelp, he gained a sizable following and high praise from critics. Since then, he has left his boisterous band and headed out on his own. Given this change, and the growing market for semi-polite indie songwriters with polished, layered instrumentation, one might expect Furman to tame his wilder muses and aim for a wider audience. This, fortunately, is not the case. The album begins with a pounding drum and a hoarse declaration that â€Å"all the world is rising up like vomit,† which segues into an explosion of loud, messy, beautiful noise. Musically, he does what is usually impossible. He took a slew of contradictory styles that lesser artists often rip off, tossed them into a blender, and instead of making something unsavory or familiar, has, with just pure skill and enthusiasm, created something brilliant. There is an unstoppable, manic energy in these 13 tracks. Still, every chaotic song is complicated and impeccably well done, despite sounding unrehearsed and spontaneous. A loud, ripping saxophone is featured heavily, adding to the colorful chaos that further separates Furman from the lump of indie singer-songwriters. â€Å"Walk On in Darkness† comes off as punkish Tom Waits, as he growls, sighs, and yelps while the sax and viscous instrumentation cast a strange, surreal feel. In what is probably the most jaw-dropping song, Furman struts Lou Reed-like through the first few minutes of â€Å"Slacker Adria,† his voice intertwined with blistering guitarwork, before the song soars into prophetic lyrics and muscular guitar, finishing with a swell of noise. On another highlight, â€Å"My Zero,† Furman shows his skill at creating pop music. A love song on the surface, underneath it is a longing fantasy of a lost, surreal America. It makes prominent use of a bright sax, which, by the end slips into tense, broken blares. Furman (with help from his band, the Boyfriends) has poured his heart into â€Å"Day of the Dog† and created the best kind of album. You can feel its thumping pulse, and every listen reveals more.
